1. Description:
The general characteristics of ceramics are their refractory
character (resistance to very high temperatures), their hardness,
their chemical inertness and in general, their very low thermal (in
polycrystalline form) and electrical
conductivities. Other specific properties can also be conferred on them such as
ferrimagnetism, semi-conductivity or
superconductivity. Ceramics are not generally ductile and have a low resistance to
thermal shock. These two major deficiencies seriously limit their applications.
As a result from recent research, the fracture toughness and
shock-resistance of zirconia (ZrO2) has been substantially
improved.
